About the Internship

The Summer Scholarly Writing Internship is part of STEM Fellowship’s Scholarly Viewpoint Challenge initiative.

The program helps students build the research, argumentation, and presentation skills emphasized in the AP Seminar program and valued in university applications.

Students learn how to identify meaningful questions, evaluate evidence, construct defensible arguments, and communicate their conclusions to academic audiences.

Human-AI Synergy in Research Practice

Generative AI tools are integrated into the research workflow to support discovery, literature mapping, and synthesis — not to replace student thinking, but to strengthen it.

WEEK 1

BUILDING THE FOUNDATION

FINDING THE RESEARCH GAP

Learn to read scientific papers with Al like a true researcher to identify a unique, defensible research question.

EVALUATING THE EVIDENCE

Move beyond basic reading into critical analysis by understanding where the scientific community contradicts itself.

STRENGTHENING THE ARGUMENT

You will use Al to build a strong thesis and leam how to anticipate academic criticism.

THE STRUCTURAL BLUEPRINT

Organize all your findings into a professional manuscript architecture, with a 5-minute pitch, and a detailed, multi-level outline with integrated citations.

WEEK 2

FROM DRAFT TO PRESENTATION

THE SCHOLARLY VOICE

Master the "Ethics of Voice" by writing for an academic audience. Draft a compelling Introduction and Literature Review while strictly avoiding "Al-sounding" prose.

BUILDING THE CORE

Use Al to synthesize your findings into a cohesive narrative, check your drafts for clarity, flow, and professional "academic register," backed by 1-on-1 technical data reviews with your mentor.

THE FINISHING TOUCHES

Write a high-impact Abstract, manage references with Zotero, format your paper for the STEM Fellowship Journal template, and complete a transparent Al-disclosure check.

THE CULMINATING SYMPOSIUMTURAL

After the final peer-editing round-robins, you will deliver a 7-minute scholarly presentation of your work at The Catalyst Showcase before parents, board members, and invited academics.

Instructor-Led (AP) Pathway

Designed specifically for students preparing for highly selective university admissions and AP Seminar, AP Capstone.

Participants will:

Two Weeks of Intensive Instruction
Monday to Thursday in-person classes (9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) and Friday online sessions.
AI-Enhanced Workflow
Training in professional AI tools to map the frontiers of science and accelerate research.
Scholarly Writing
Progress from AI-assisted ideation to literature review and drafting a publication-ready viewpoint manuscript.
University Preparation
Publication in a scholarly journal and development of a portfolio aligned with AP Seminar expectations and competitive admissions criteria.

Students in this pathway gain hands-on experience with the core components of AP Seminar:

Collaborative Inquiry: Working with peers to investigate real-world or academic issues, evaluate multiple perspectives, and propose evidence-based solutions presented through multimedia.
Independent Research: Developing a research question from stimulus materials, analyzing and synthesizing evidence, constructing an argument, and defending conclusions in a formal presentation.

By the end of the program, students will have produced a polished scholarly manuscript, strengthened their academic communication skills, and built a portfolio that demonstrates readiness for AP Seminar, AP Research, and undergraduate-level scholarship.
