Program Information
who can participate?
Undergraduate, Graduate, and CEGEP students from in Canada
How often is the program offered?
The program is offered annually, each year featuring a new STEM-focused theme. We encourage applicants to reapply and further develop their research skills on new challenges.
What is the program format?
The program is offered as a hybrid model where the research phase is online followed by an in-person conference. Participants have the choice to participate in either the Canada West Conference (Calgary, Alberta) or Canada East Conference (Toronto, Ontario).
Award for Best Manuscript
The best manuscript at each conference will have its publication fee waived as part of the award and will be published with Underline.io under its own DOI.
Award Winners Publication
Authors of winning manuscripts acknowledge that free publication of their research paper is conditioned on the completion of editorial revisions and meeting publication standards.
Publication for Other Participants
All other participants may choose to publish their manuscripts with Underline.io under their own DOI, with a discounted fee provided by STEM Fellowship.
Conditions for Paid Publication
By opting to pay this fee, participants acknowledge and accept full responsibility for the publication process and understand that payment does not guarantee publication.

Manuscripts will only be published if they successfully pass double peer review, and the fee is non-refundable if the manuscript does not meet this standard.

“STEM Fellowship has been one of the most meaningful things I’ve done in undergrad so far. I joined not really knowing what to expect, but I ended up learning so much about research, collaboration, and using AI to solve real-world healthcare problems. The best part was getting to work with such a supportive and multi-university team. It really pushed me to grow and made me feel like I had something valuable to contribute, even as an undergrad. I’m so grateful for the experience and would recommend it to anyone who wants to challenge themselves and be part of something impactful.”

“This opportunity allowed me to gain research experience at a time when very few spaces trusted students like me with meaningful projects. Being part of this program wasn’t just about learning software or writing reports; it was about being seen, supported, and challenged in ways that pushed me to grow. I’m deeply grateful to have contributed to impactful research in Alzheimer’s drug discovery, alongside an incredible team, using tools I never thought I’d have access to this early in my journey.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Who can register for HSBDC?
Students and parents can register individual students for Instructor-led program. Student groups of up to 5 (or their member), parent, or teacher can register a team for the Self-paced participation.
Do I need previous programming experience?
You do not need any previous experience with programming. We welcome all students who are eager to put effort into learning and expanding their skillsets, as well as those who show any level of interest in data science or the challenge topic. Additionally, we will provide you with access to resources and webinars to learn everything you need to succeed!
How do I form or join a team?
For the Self-paced program, we encourage students to team up with their peers.  You may form a team of students at the same or different high schools. It is also recommended to make interdisciplinary teams given the nature of our data challenge topics.
Do I need to have an idea for my project?
Think about what interests you the most in the field of the provided topic. Read the internet and research articles. In challenges like this one, many teams come up with their topics in the first few days of the challenge, rather than beforehand.
Is this challenge only open to Canadian students?
No, students from any country can sign up. Please note that the final conferences will be held in Calgary and Toronto.
Can students from different high schools form a team?
Yes, students do not necessarily have to represent the high school at which they are studying.
